# What is DID/OSDD.

DID. Dissociative identity disorder is a severe form of dissociation, a mental process which produces a lack of connection in a person's thoughts, memories, feelings, actions, or sense of identity. Dissociative identity disorder is thought to stem from a combination of factors that may include trauma experienced by the person with the disorder. The dissociative aspect is thought to be a coping mechanism -- the person literally shuts off or dissociates themselves from a situation or experience that's too violent, traumatic, or painful to assimilate with their conscious self.OSDD-1a . For individuals with OSDD-1a, dissociated parts are more likely to present as the same individual at different ages, as the same individual in different modes, or as different versions of the same individual. The individual may go by the same name regardless of which part is present, and each part may view itself as the main part. However, parts may still have different skills, emotional reactivity, or ways of interacting with the world. Additionally, because these parts lack full awareness of each other and each others’ activities, they may express themselves in highly contradictory ways. For example, someone with OSDD-1a may have a work self, a family self, a 5 year old self, and an angry self in addition to several parts that hold trauma memories. The work self may fully believe that work always needs to come first while the family self always prioritizes family, and these parts may become confused or agitated when others point out inconsistencies in their behavior or stated beliefs.OSDD-1b . An OSDD-1b system is more likely to present in a way where members of the system are differentiated from each other but do not experience amnesia of events between the members. They may, however, experience emotional amnesia - remembering the event that happened, but not the associated emotion. Due to being fairly differentiated, the different members of the system may also have different emotional attachments to events due to simply having different personalities.

# Common Terminology .

TRAUMAGENIC . A system that formed due to outside trauma; one of the two most prominent formation categories. There are no restrictions on the type of trauma that can cause a system since trauma is highly subjective depending on the specific person, but it has to have occurred in early childhood.SYSTEM . A system is a collection of alters within one body. The entirety of a dissociative identity disorder (DID) system, or an other specified dissociative disorder (OSDD) system includes all of the alters within one body.ALTER . A person with Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID), or a similar form of Other Specified Dissociative Disorder (OSDD) has a fragmented personality. A person with DID experiences themselves as having separate identities, known as alters, or alternate identities. Alters take over control of the person's body or behavior at various times. Each can function independently.INTROJECT . In systems, introjection can sometimes create system members. This is when a system member is based off of an external figure such as a person, or character. In DID or OSDD, these system members are commonly called introject alters or copy alters. In the plural community, system members that are introjects may be called fictionals when they're based on fictional sources or factuals when they're based on real sources.
Yes, Introjects of CCs can happen and are just as valid.
BRAINMADE. Alters without outer sources. They may or may not have outer influences that helped form their personality. They come from the “brain”, hence are brainmade.FRONTERS. Alters that currently experience the “outer world” (reality) and are in control of the body. They may or may not have access to the INNER WORLD world while doing so, and there may or may not be more than one current fronter. It depends on each system how they front.INNER WORLD. Also commonly referred to as internal worlds or headspaces (controversial).
A place that alters retreat to when not fronting, and when there they are often able to see themselves and other alters as separate individuals.
Inner worlds vary wildly between systems, and are formed based on the needs of each individual system. As such, not all systems have innerworlds as not all systems need them.
BLENDING. Also commonly referred to as blurring.
When two or more parts seem to merge together or overlap due to DISSOCIATION or SWITCHING.
DISSOCIATION. A break in how the mind processes and handles information.
Can cause a disconnect from one's surroundings, thoughts, or feelings. Often will impact your sense of identity and time.
SWITCHING. An alter taking control of the body.
Can be forced, consensual, or triggered by an outside source.
Often causes dissociation and external symptoms, such as headache or muscle spasms.
CO-CONSCIOUS. When an alter is aware of outside events at the time of them happening, but is not actively fronting. May or may not be giving PASSIVE INFLUENCE to the FRONTERS.PASSIVE INFLUENCE. When an alter who is not fronting's traits or abilities are temporarily influencing the alter that is fronting. May take the form of gaining or losing abilities.
